Qualcomm announces Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 as the best mobile platform
3 min readOn the first day of Snapdragon Tech Summit 2021Qualcomm has officially made its new mobile platform targeting high-end phones: Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. It consists of rebranding the name of the chipset series, Expected from the past few weeks.
The highlights are the advancements in 5G support, camera compatibility, and performance for both gaming and artificial intelligence. You can check the details below.
Connection
For connectivity, Qualcomm is the most advanced mobile platform on the 5G mobile network. That’s because the presence of the Snapdragon X65 5G modem allows you to reach download speeds of up to 10Gbps.
For wireless broadband, there’s the Qualcomm FastConnect 6900, which supports speeds of up to 3.6Gbps and is compatible with Wi-Fi 6 and 6E technologies. The semiconductor developer claims that the component will allow for smoother, more fluid performance in applications and games, even with multiple devices connected on the same network.
Chiras
Snapdragon Sight technology brings to these chipsets the first 18-bit ISP built for mobile devices. It is capable of capturing up to 4000 times more data through the camera than its predecessor. In practice, this means improvements in dynamic range, color, and contrast. The capture speed can still be up to 3.2 gigapixels per second.
The new Snapdragon 8 will also have a separate fourth ISP, focused on allowing the camera to operate at low power consumption. The goal here is to use it for facial recognition when the screen is unlocked, for example.
In videos, the device will enable 8K recordings with HDR and HDR10+, in order to carry over a billion colors. Another new feature is the feature called bokeh engine, a motor that provides a kind of portrait mode for shooting.
Artificial intelligence
The platform’s AI is powered by the 7th generation Qualcomm AI Engine, for higher performance, and the Qualcomm Hexagon processor, which offers twice the faster tensor accelerator and twice the shared memory compared to its predecessor.
In practice, this will make it possible to capture professional-quality photos through the smart filters built into the Leica Leitz Look, as well as having an artificial intelligence based on natural language processing to act as a personal assistant and analyze your notifications.
The company has also worked with Sonde Health to accelerate AI models that can analyze voice patterns and identify risks for health issues such as asthma, depression, and even Covid-19.
Furthermore, there is a new always-enabled system powered by the 3rd generation Sensing Hub, with the goal of processing more data sent with less power.
the games
When it comes to gaming, Qualcomm has added over 50 Snapdragon Elite Gaming features. They are responsible for delivering more responsiveness and fluidity, rich color scenes and HDR, as well as the ability of the desktop to play games.
The new Adreno GPU also promises improvements in gaming, from a 30% increase in graphics rendering capacity to a 25% improvement in power savings over the previous generation.
Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 also comes with features that promise to generate twice as many frames at the same power consumption and provide better control for developers to improve the performance of their products.
as
In terms of audio, there are three basic audio enhancement techniques. The integration between Bluetooth 5.2 and Snapdragon Sound is responsible for generating cleaner sound and music.
Qualcomm aptX Lossless Technology delivers wireless CD-quality audio, which means no quality loss. These chipsets will be the first to offer LE Audio features such as broadcasting, stereo recording, and audio feedback in games.
Safety
Another important part is security, to keep users’ personal data protected. First in line is a dedicated trust management mechanism for greater security, particularly in app and service permissions.
The Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 will pioneer Android Ready SE, a new standard for digital car keys and driver’s licenses, and will support iSIM, an integrated carrier chip for mobile network connectivity without the need for a SIM card.
Availability
Qualcomm has indicated that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 will be adopted by global manufacturers such as Black Shark, Honor, iQOO, Motorola, Nubia, OnePlus, OPPO, realme, Redmi, Sharp, Sony, vivo, Xiaomi and ZTE. Commercial devices are still expected by the end of 2021.
