The World Health Organization says the Omicron type of coronavirus is spreading at an unprecedented rate
2 min readThe World Health Organization (WHO) said on Tuesday (14) that no different type of Covid-19 has so far spread as fast as omicron. The organization calculates that all countries of the world have already been affected.
“Currently, 77 countries have reported cases of omicron, but the truth is that omicron is probably in most countries, although they haven’t detected it yet. Omicron is spreading at a rate we haven’t seen with any other variant,” the director said. WHO general, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, at a press conference.
“We are concerned that people consider omicron to be mild (…) even though omicron causes less serious disease, the number of cases could overburden unprepared health systems,” he added.
The head of the World Health Organization also warned the international community that vaccines alone will not allow any country to get out of this crisis, and called on them to take advantage of all current measures to combat the Corona virus, such as masks and social distance. “Do it all. Do it consistently, do it well,” he insisted.
Tedros also stressed that many countries precipitated the application of booster doses in adult populations after the onset of the omicron variant, even “without evidence of the efficacy of booster doses against this variant”.
With these measures, the World Health Organization fears that rich countries will collect immunizing agents again and poor countries will not be able to advance their own vaccination campaigns. The Director of the World Health Organization stressed, “I will be clear: The World Health Organization is not against booster injections. We are against injustice” in vaccines.
