U.S. officials said Monday that the United States is seeking to increase pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin, with more sanctions on Moscow, more weapons for Ukraine and an investigation into alleged war crimes committed by Russian soldiers.

As Russia retreats from the suburbs of Kiev, the war focuses on areas further east, where Moscow already controls and seeks to expand territory.

“Russia is redeploying its forces to focus its offensive in eastern and southern Ukraine,” White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said Monday.

“Russia’s attempt to subdue the whole of Ukraine has failed. Now it will try to subdue some parts of the country,” Sullivan said, estimating that this new phase of the military offensive would “last for months or more.”

But as the Russians withdrew from parts of northern Ukraine and quickly abandoned plans to overthrow President Volodymyr Zhelensky, numerous bodies were found in the territory they controlled, further increasing Washington’s determination to compress.

US President Joe Biden has said he wants a “war crimes trial” following the discovery of civilian-dressed bodies near the Kiev city of Pucha. He also argued that further sanctions should be imposed against Russia.

Biden reiterated that he considered his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin a “war criminal” and classified him as “brutal”. “He should be held accountable,” he said.

Jake Sullivan, meanwhile, announced that the United States and its allies would announce new sanctions against Russia this week. According to a US official, potential energy-related activities are being explored, a very important topic for Europeans who are heavily dependent on Russian gas.

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken will be in Brussels on Wednesday and Thursday for a meeting of NATO foreign ministers.

On the ground, the United States is working to increase the size and power of its weapons supply to Ukrainian forces. Jack Sullivan noted that the Biden administration had already provided $ 2.3 billion in weapons, and that Washington was working with allies to provide “long-range anti-aircraft, artillery and coast guard systems.” By Russia in the hands of Eastern European countries.

“The breadth and depth of efforts to acquire and transform weapons and advanced capabilities is extraordinary and unprecedented,” the U.S. official said.

Russia noted a few days ago that it was focusing on eastern Ukraine and has redoubled its efforts in the region and in the south.
