Vicente Gonzalez of the Democratic Congress sent a letter to the government of President Joe Biden announcing on Tuesday (May 5) the cancellation of the visas of Mexican delegates who had formed a group in support of Russia a month after the invasion of Ukraine.

Gonzalez wrote a letter to Foreign Secretary Anthony Blinken and Secretary of Defense Alejandro Mayerkas asking them to cancel the visas of the Mexican delegation that formed the Mexico-Russia Friendship Group.

The group was promoted by members of the Labor Party (PT), an ally of President Andrs Manuel Lpez Obrador’s ruling Morena party, and has the backing of Russian Ambassador to Mexico Victor Cornelli.

“In the midst of the international crisis caused by Russia in Eastern Europe in recent days,” many Mexican delegates “used this opportunity to mock the independent world, to support Russian President Vladimir Putin, and to form the Mexico-Russia Friendship Group.” , Gonzalez wrote.

“Mexico, our closest neighbor in the south, has already chosen not to join the international community of democracies. On the contrary, it has refused to send aid to Ukraine or impose sanctions on Russia,” he added.

Mexican President Andrs Manuel Lpez Obrador has rejected sanctions against Russia because his government wants to “have good relations with all the governments of the world.”

According to the Mexican Chamber of Deputies, the Friendship Group between the two countries seeks to “enhance cooperation and exchange of information between legislators to meet the needs shared by both countries.”
