What is the best time to fill up and save gas?
First, know that gasoline and ethanol are chemicals and are subject to the natural laws of the planet. Therefore, its volume changes according to temperature, for example. The process of volume fluctuation is called thermal expansion or contraction.
Therefore, if you fill your car in a very hot time, the tendency is to put in less fluid than it should. In other words, in order to save gas, it is always best to try to fill up in the late afternoon, at night, or in the early hours of the morning. So the fuel will be more compact and you will end up taking more volume home.
How to save gasoline: the temperature says a lot
If you still do not believe it, we will explain it better. When the vehicle temperature rises, the fuel expands inside the tank. This causes the same amount of liquid to take up more space. As it cools, the contact area decreases and the fuel occupies a much smaller area.
However, when you fill up, you are buying volume of fuel, not mass. The mass remains the same and that’s what makes the car move. However, if you’re buying on a volume basis (in liters), you’d prefer to do so on the coldest days of the year.
This is a good tip to help save gas in times of such expensive fuel.
