UFC 278: Leon Edwards ousts Kamaru Usman, welterweight champion | fighting
2 min readOsman began to control the movements, taking the position of the octagon, and when he tried to take it to the ground, he saw the Englishman lose his balance and his guard entered to hit the ground and tossed. Edwards got to his feet shortly thereafter and surprised him by landing a removal. This was the first time in 16 battles that a Nigerian had been put down. The opponent went to the podium, moved to the back, and, although not succumbing, got the first round in his favor.
After losing in the first round, the champion came back strong in blows, with a long sequence of hits. The fighting even stopped briefly after an inadvertent finger in the eye of the challenger in Uthman. In the comeback, the Nigerian was superior at batting and applied a takedown in the last seconds. Champion’s dominance increased in the third round, both in standing and in combat.
In the fourth round, Edwards appeared to no longer have the proper weapons for the action against the Nigerian. He even tried to turn back, but he couldn’t take it down or put the hooks on. Osman escaped and resumed the monologue. In the last five minutes, the champion remained in control and the opponent did little to change the scenario. Even Edwards did what seemed impossible: he fired a lofty kick into the head of Usman, who collapsed, and he was knocked out.
