On Sunday, Russia said it had attacked Ukraine’s military command and control system and energy facilities the day before, but made no mention of the missile, which hit an apartment building in the city of Dnipro and killed at least 21 civilians.
“On January 14, a missile strike was carried out against the Ukrainian military command and control system and related energy facilities. All identified targets were hit. The goal was achieved,” Defense Ministry spokesman Lieutenant General Igor Konashenkov said.
According to the head of the Dnipropetrovsk regional military administration, Valentin Reznichenko, one of the missiles hit a nine-storey building in the city of Dnipro, killing at least 21 people, including a minor.
Reznichenko said on his Telegram channel on Sunday that 71 people were injured, including 13 minors, while rescue workers rescued 39 civilians, including six minors.
Emergency services are still searching for 40 people under the rubble of the collapsed building.
The commander of the Ukrainian Air Force, Lieutenant General Mykola Oleshuk, had reported on Saturday evening that the building was a Kh-22 missile launched from Russia’s Kursk region.
The approximate launch location, altitude and flight speed were detected by radar, but the military commented that “the Armed Forces of Ukraine do not have weapons capable of shooting down this type of missile”.
He stressed that “since the beginning of the Russian military aggression, more than 210 missiles of this type have been launched over the territory of Ukraine, and not a single missile has been shot down by anti-aircraft defense,” noting that the weight of the Kh-22 warhead is about 950 kilograms and its range is about 950 kilograms. maximum to 600 km.
He stressed that “only anti-aircraft missile systems that can be supplied to Ukraine in the future by Western partners (Patriot PAC-3 or SAMP-T) are capable of intercepting these air targets.”
Despite this, the previous day Ukraine had managed to shoot down 25 out of 38 missiles of various types launched by Russia, including the Kh-101, 555, Caliber and Kh-59.
