247 – Chinese scientists Yi Yang and Xiaodong Song, seismologists at Peking University, pointed out in a scientific article published in the journal “Nature Geoscience” that the Earth’s core stopped spinning faster than the Earth itself. The study was conducted using information about earthquakes. The two researchers have been studying the phenomenon since 1995.

The core rotates faster than the Earth itself, but in recent decades (perhaps in 2009) it would have kept up with the natural motion of the planet.

Changing the speed of the Earth’s fundamental rotation can have consequences such as changing the duration of an entire day by a few milliseconds. The Earth’s rotation around its axis affects the length of the day, which is 23 hours, 56 minutes, 4 seconds and 0.9 part of a second.

Other possible changes would be changes in sea level and Earth’s temperature.
