A boat carrying more than 100 migrants sank off the coast of Calabria, Italy

At least 33 people have died after a boat carrying migrants sank on the eastern coast of the Calabria region of Italy, according to international news agencies on Sunday (26).

27 bodies were found on the beaches of Steccato di Cutro, a seaside resort in the province of Crotone, ANSA said, adding that more bodies were seen in the water and not rescued.

The agency also reported that the death toll is not final and should rise.

Adnkronos said the ship carrying migrants from Iran, Pakistan and Afghanistan hit rocks in rough seas.

Agencies said at least 40 people survived the sinking.

More than 100 people were on board the ship, the Adnkronos news agency said, while another Italian news agency said an infant and several children were among the dead.

Italy is one of the main landing points for migrants trying to enter Europe by sea. But the Central Mediterranean Road is one of the most dangerous in the world.

According to the International Organization for Migration’s Missing Migrants Project, 20,333 people have died or gone missing in the central Mediterranean since 2014.
