6.5 magnitude earthquake hits Afghanistan;  teenager dies |  world

In the provincial capital of Faizabad, Ashraf Nail, 29, said he was at home when he Windows started shaking tightly for about a minute.

“My brothers and sisters ran outside,” said Nael. “We live in a concrete house, but mud houses can get damaged.”

Initially, the earthquake was reported to have a magnitude of 6.8, but the value was later revised to 6.5, according to the US Geological Survey.

In June last year, an earthquake in eastern Afghanistan left more than 1,500 dead and sent a trail of destruction across the country, where the economy is already rocked after the fundamentalist Taliban regime seized control of the government in 2021. It had a magnitude of 6.1 – much smaller than today – but it was Much closer to the surface, only 10 kilometers deep.
