The man’s foot was sewn back

In some cases, doctors are forced to make unconventional decisions to save someone’s life. This is what happened to the British youth, Ibrahim Abdel Raouf, 22, who was diagnosed with the disease cancer Bone: His foot was sewn back.

This story begins in 2015, when Ibrahim was 14 years old. During a football match with his brother, the young man was hit so hard that he was knocked to the ground. He hoped that the next day he would recover, but this did not happen.

First diagnosis: osteomyelitis

“I felt like I had bumps in my legs and I couldn’t put any weight on them,” he recalled to the New York Post. He also said that, at first, his mother didn’t think he was in pain. “I thought I was making excuses for not going to school.”

In the hospital, he was diagnosed with osteomyelitis. Abdel Raouf was admitted to the health institution to treat the health problem, but it did not improve, even with antibiotics and other treatments for the illness of the first diagnosis.

“It wasn’t getting better. The pain was getting worse and I had a big lump on my leg. They thought it could be a blister or a cyst.

Second diagnosis: bone cancer

Upon his return, Ibrahim was transferred to the Royal Orthopedic Hospital in Birmingham, one of the cities of England. Only then was he diagnosed with bone cancer. But the amputation of the foot – and its reverse stitching – will not come until after a while.

Prior to that, the boy underwent treatment Chemotherapy for six months. Since the expected effectiveness was not achieved, the doctors decided to amputate part of the leg. Without this, cancer can spread to other organs in the body.

Choosing to sew the foot in the opposite direction was thought to make it easier for Ibrahim to use the prosthesis and use the knee motion. “This way I can use my legs and my nerves,” explained the young man.

Foot backwards: “I thought it would be something akin to Frankenstein”

Ibrahim said he did not know he would be stitching his foot back into his leg.

“I thought it was going to be something like Frankenstein,” he recalled. “After the surgery, I woke up completely naked. I didn’t know if they had operated on me or not. I pulled up the sheet and couldn’t believe what I was seeing. I had one leg when I passed out and woke up with my feet upside down.”

After the operation, the young man had to undergo another five months of chemotherapy. “I thought I was going to die,” he said. But in the end, it all worked out—thankfully.

After rehabilitation, Ibrahim is now able to play sports, dance and lead an independent life.
