A 23-year-old girl died days after the extraction of one of her wisdom teeth, in Lime City, within the city of São Paulo. The girl went into cardiorespiratory arrest after being admitted to Santa Casa due to facial cellulitis and a dental abscess.

According to medical studies, facial cellulitis is an infection caused by bacteria that infect different layers of the skin. It is in no way similar to the common cellulite, which we have in the rest of our body, which is made up of fat accumulation.

Facial cellulitis presents as follows: redness, swelling, and warmth in the area and fever. Pus can develop and appear, like abscesses.

The case of the young woman, who died after having her wisdom teeth removed, is still under investigation, and the civil police suspect the cause of death. However, it is a fact, according to medical studies, that facial cellulitis can lead to death.

This is because the infection can quickly spread to the rest of the body if it is not treated properly.

Many cases of facial cellulitis have a dental origin – that is, they are caused by bacteria in the mouth. However, it can arise from other sources, such as inflamed acne.

Facial cellulitis occurs at a higher rate in children and young adults. Model Renata Banhara was hospitalized for 12 days in the intensive care unit for a type 1 infection.
