Corinthians punished with a game behind closed doors for homophobic chants in the classic | Corinthians

On trial before the Supreme Court of Sports Justice for Football (STJD), Corinthians were punished by losing a field match behind closed doors by Homophobic chants sung by Corinthians fans in the derby between Corinthians and Sao Paulo on May 14.

The match was held at the Neo Química Arena, with only the home team cheering on, and ended in a 1-1 draw, for the Brazilian championship.

Corinthians’ next home match in Serie A will be on July 2 against Red Bull Bragantino in the 13th round of the tournament. There is still an appeal.

This is the first sanction of this kind since the implementation of the CBF’s new general competition regulations, which this year have made penalties for cases of this kind more stringent.

During the Corinthians defense, both Lucio da Silva Blanco, director of the New Quimeca Arena, and Corinthians director of football Alessandro were heard.

Both confirmed that the cries were chanted, but stated that the club follows the full handbook which contains guidelines to educate fans..

The punishment is in line with Article 243-G of the Brazilian Code of Sports Justice, which deals with “the practice of a discriminatory, derogatory or disgraceful act, relating to prejudice based on ethnic origin, race, gender, color, age, elderly status or disability of a person.”

Lucas Jodor Silvestre, assistant coach and son of Dorival Jr., was acquitted of the curses cast during the match.. The argument was justified as “an act of catharsis, without any intention of disrespecting or attacking the refereeing team”.
