Flavonoids — found in apples, grapes, strawberries and blueberries, among other fruits — are associated with increased immunity and health protection.
Although no significant link was found between flavonoid intake and frailty, higher intakes of these metabolites were associated with prevention of frailty.
The discovery was made by researchers at Harvard Medical School, Boston, USA, after a trial of 1,791 people, followed for 12 years, and published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Approximately 10 to 15% of older adults have asthenic syndrome, a disease that can lead to increased risks of falls, fractures, disability, hospitalization, and death.

“There may be some truth to the old adage, an apple a day keeps the doctor away,” said the study authors. “Our findings indicate that for every 10 mg of flavonoid intake per day, the odds of impairment decrease by 20%.”
The diet is easy to follow, because a medium-sized apple actually contains about 10 mg of the stuff.

To arrive at such evidence, the researchers analyzed 1,701 people’s diets over a 12-year period.
The result indicated an anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antiallergic and antiviral effect of flavonoids.
It can be easily found in many fruits and vegetables such as broccoli, onions, spinach, and kale.
Over the years of the study, 13.2% of the participants ended up developing asthenic syndrome.
Those with the highest intake of flavonoids reduced their risk of developing the syndrome by 20%.
