The Venezuelan opposition put an end to the “interim government” of Juan Guaidó, recognized by the United States and Brazil, this Friday, the 30th, after a desperate offensive to oust socialist President Nicolás Maduro.

With an absolute majority in the parliament elected in 2015, the opposition leadership, defending the continuation of Chavismo’s victory in the 2020 legislative elections as fraudulent, decided to end the interim government from January 5 by 72 votes to 29 and 8. omissions.

The political defeat of Guaidó, the face of the Maduro government’s opposition to the international community, comes as the president’s opponents plan primaries to determine who will face him in elections scheduled for 2024.

Guaidó, the head of the opposition legislature, failed to build a majority to retain the interim figure despite warning in a video released two days earlier of “the real risk of assets, lawsuits or being handed over to the dictator”. .

The decision was taken by former legislators who were elected in 2015, despite their term ending in 2021. Maduro regained power in the National Assembly.

The parties that voted in favor of lifting the interim order propose the creation of a commission to manage the assets of the Venezuelan state abroad that are in the hands of the opposition, along with temporary meetings of the Central Bank of Venezuela. State oil company PDVSA to maintain control of Citco – a refinery in Houston (USA) previously controlled by the Maduro government.
