Libya is a country mired in a deep political crisis since the fall of Muammar Gaddafi’s regime in 2011, weakened by divisions between east and west and foreign interference. Between 2019 and 2020, Khalifa Haftar, the ‘de facto’ leader of eastern Libya, turned to fighters from other countries and mercenaries from the Wagner Group in his attempt to take control of the capital, Tripoli.
