The study involved 50 participants aged 65 and over, who wore sleep monitors for a year and a half.
The research took place in Boston, a city known for its varying temperature extremes. Participants slept in their own homes, allowing the researchers to gather accurate and real-world data. The analysis of the data collected from 11,000 nights of sleep revealed that participants experienced the most efficient and restful sleep when the bedroom temperature was between 20 and 25 degrees Celsius.
Interestingly, the study also found that participants were the most restless at a temperature of 30 degrees Celsius, which resulted in a 5-10 percent drop in sleep efficiency. Previous research suggests that this decline in sleep efficiency can have significant impacts on cognitive performance, stress levels, activity levels, anxiety, mood, and fatigue.
