Shiv Telegram Media – Remembering Ryan Minor, Orioles 3B Who Replaced Ripken After Streak

Former Baltimore Orioles infielder Ryan Minor, who made baseball history by replacing Cal Ripken Jr. at the end of his consecutive games streak in 1998, has passed away at the age of 49. The University of Oklahoma, where Minor excelled in both baseball and basketball, announced that he lost his battle with cancer. The Orioles released a statement expressing their sadness and offering condolences to Minor’s family and friends.

Minor’s career with the Orioles began in 1996 when he was drafted by the team. He then made his MLB debut in 1998. However, it was his role on September 20, 1998, that cemented his name in baseball history. During the Orioles’ final home game of the season, Cal Ripken Jr. decided to end his remarkable streak of 2,632 consecutive games, allowing Minor to start at third base for the first time in his career.

Following his time with the Orioles, Minor also played for the Montreal Expos, appearing in a total of 142 major league games. His impact on the Orioles’ organization was further highlighted this summer when the Delmarva Shorebirds, an Orioles minor league affiliate, retired his No. 44 jersey, making it the first jersey number in team history to be retired.

Minor’s connection with the Orioles extended beyond his playing days. He had multiple managerial stints with both the Delmarva Shorebirds and the Frederick Keys. His dedication to the game and his contributions as a mentor were valued by the Orioles’ organization.

In addition to his baseball achievements, Minor also had a successful college career. He played a crucial role in helping the Oklahoma Sooners secure a national title in baseball in 1994. Additionally, he was named the Big Eight Player of the Year in basketball in 1995. His talents didn’t go unnoticed, as he was drafted in the second round by the Philadelphia 76ers in 1996.

Minor’s impact on the sports world has not gone unnoticed. The Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame recently announced that he will be inducted as part of its 2024 class, honoring his outstanding contributions to the world of sports.

Ryan Minor will be remembered for his historic role in replacing Cal Ripken Jr., his impact on the Orioles organization, and his remarkable collegiate career. The baseball and basketball communities mourn the loss of a talented athlete and a respected individual.
