The results were similar to statistics released last week by the Israeli health group Maccabi, one of several organizations administering booster doses to try to contain the delta type of coronavirus.

Ministry officials said the detailed statistics are from Israel’s eKI Institute Among subjects over 60 years of age, protection against infection offered ten days after the third dose was four times greater than the dose after the two doses.

A third dose for over 60s has given five to six times more protection after ten days of serious illness and hospitalization.

This age group is particularly vulnerable to Covid-19, and in Israel they were the first to receive vaccinations in late December.

In recent weeks, the Department of Health said immunity has declined over time for the elderly and young alike.

Most of the seriously ill vaccinated people in Israel are over the age of 60.

Israel began giving the third dose in over 60 years on July 30. On Thursday, it lowered the age of eligibility to more than 40, and it included pregnant women, teachers and underage health workers.
