Groups in Haiti attempt to take over main airport while thousands break out of prisons: Committing indiscriminate massacres – CBS News

Heavily armed gangs attempted to take control of Haiti’s main airport, Toussaint Louverture International Airport, in a bold and brazen attack that left the nation on edge. The airport was forced to close as gunfire erupted between the gangs and local police and soldiers.

During the attack, an armored truck was seen on the tarmac, shooting at the gangs in an attempt to thwart their efforts. Thankfully, the gangs did not manage to enter the airport, but it was unclear if their attack was successful in achieving their intended goal.

This incident comes on the heels of a mass prison escape at Haiti’s two largest prisons over the weekend, further destabilizing the already precarious security situation in the country. In response to the escalating violence, a 72-hour state of emergency and nighttime curfew have been implemented.

The United Nations has expressed deep concern over the deteriorating security environment in the capital city of Port-au-Prince, where armed gangs reportedly control up to 80% of the area. In an effort to address the crisis, the prime minister has traveled to Kenya to seek support for a UN-backed security force to help restore order to the country.

The surge in attacks follows a series of violent protests and clashes that have resulted in numerous deaths, prompting urgent calls for US citizens to leave Haiti due to the escalating violence. Unfortunately, many Haitian Americans are currently stranded in the country due to flight cancellations and the dangerous situation, adding to the sense of chaos and uncertainty gripping the nation.
