The professor at UFPE is one of the winners of the 16th edition of the For Women in Science

PhD in Statistics from the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE), Fernanda de Bastiani is one of the seven winners of the 16th edition of the Prize for Women in Science, organized by L’Oréal in partnership with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. (UNESCO) and the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (ABC). The UFPE Graduate Program Professor of Statistics studies focus on public health emergencies around the world. Given the number of cases, the number of deaths, the infection rate and other variables according to the location, the aim of the research is to help understand the spatial variability of Covid-19 in Pernambuco. The award is one of the biggest incentives for women who conduct scientific research, offering a grant of R$50,000 to each winner to continue their studies. Applications open each year for the fields of life sciences, physical sciences, chemical sciences, and mathematics.

In the field of life sciences, four researchers were honored: a biologist and professor at the Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul (UFMS) Leticia Couto; Professor at the Federal University of Piaui (UFPI) Lilian Cattanacci; Owaldo Cruz Foundation virologist (Fiocruz) Marta Giovannitti; and ecologist and professor at the Federal University of Para (UFPA) Taissa Michelin. In chemistry, the only award given was that of Professor Anna Cecilia Albergaria Barbosa of the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA). In the field of physics, Ingrid Barcellos, a physicist from the National Center for Research in Energy and Materials (CNPEM) was selected.
