Senator Warren, a longtime critic of Amazon, said, “The documents show what we feared about Amazon’s monopoly power: the company deliberately manipulated its site to support its profits while harming small businesses and entrepreneurs.”
“This is one of the many reasons we have to split the company,” the senator said.
Warren, a key member of the Democratic Party, Defended the split of Amazon and other major technology companies in 2019When she ran for president of the United States. Since then, as a senator, he has continued to put pressure on companies like Amazon.
Ken Buck, a Republican and member of the rival defense subcommittee on the U.S. House of Representatives, shared the Reuters report. “These documents demonstrate that Amazon is engaged in anti-competitive practices such as manipulating search results and promoting favorable behavior for its products rather than competitors’ products.”
“Very worrying, this is contrary to what Jeff Bezos told Congress,” the deputy said. “Amazon and Bezos should be held accountable.”
When contacted, Amazon said in a statement that “the allegations are false and baseless.”
“We show search results based on consumer relevance, regardless of whether they are personally branded by the seller.”
Amazon added that it “strictly prohibits the use or sharing of non-public sales data, including by private label vendors” and that it examines reports of employees acting contrary to this policy.
