Germany records more than 50,000 new cases of Covid-19 for the first time in the epidemic | Globalism
2 min reada Germany Today, Thursday (11) recorded the largest number of daily infections with Covid-19 since the beginning of the epidemic, with 50,196 new infections within 24 hours.
This is the first time that the country has crossed the threshold of 50,000 cases in one day. The previous record was 45,333 new infections recorded on January 7.
Europe has been hit by a fourth wave of Covid-19 that is starting to put pressure on hospitals in many countries, including Germany.
But due to vaccination, the number of deaths has not increased at the same rate. (69% of Germans received at least one dose and 66% were fully vaccinated).
The Robert Koch Institute for Health Surveillance also recorded 235 deaths in the past 24 hours, a level still well below the record of 1,734 victims of the virus, which was reached on January 19.
However, Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Wednesday that the rise in infections in the country was “dramatic”. “The epidemic is spreading again in an amazing way,” his spokesperson lamented.
He urged regional authorities to take new measures to curb the spread of the virus (in Germany, local governments are responsible for adopting restrictions).

Many states that have been severely affected by the new wave of infections, such as Saxony, Bavaria and, more recently, Berlin, Introduced new restrictions on unvaccinated people.
In the capital, Berlin, non-restaurants will not be able to access restaurants without open spaces, bars, gyms or hairdressers, not even if they test negative for Covid-19.
One of the most populous countries in Europe, with a population of 83 million, Germany has recorded more than 4.9 million confirmed cases and 97,200 deaths from Covid-19 since the start of the pandemic.
