A high school math teacher in California, United StateAfter a video clip surfaced in which she appeared in a fake headdress that mimics and mocks the indigenous people, according to reports from the American media.
The video was posted on Wednesday (19). In it, the teacher yells “sohcahtoa” as if it were an original cry – “sohcahtoa” is a word for remembering the concepts of sine (opposite divided by hypotenuse), cosine (adjacent divided by hypotenuse) and tangent (opposite divided by adjacent) of an angle.
The teacher stamps her feet and jumps and dances in a way that is supposed to resemble an aboriginal ritual. It even mentions “the god of water” and “the god of the stone,” which are attempts to make jokes.
According to the Los Angeles Times, the agency responsible for schools in the district said the teacher’s actions did not represent the district’s values.
There was a meeting to talk about the incident, and several people claimed that the teacher’s exposure was racist.
The teaching agency stated that her behavior was completely unacceptable and insulting to the indigenous peoples of America.
The teachers’ union said it was disappointed with the teacher.
The director of a Southern California indigenous rights group told the Los Angeles Times that people reacted with some anger because they considered the teacher’s actions disrespectful.
Representatives of Aboriginal communities told the newspaper that they were tired of being the subject of jokes and that they were not from fiction.
In California, students entering high school in 2030 will need to take a semester of ethnic studies before they can graduate.
Video posted by an Indigenous studies student
The video was recorded by an Aboriginal student, and posted on the social network on the profile of a woman named Akali Brown.
Buzzfeed News met with Brown. She is a student of Indigenous Studies at the University of California, and she received a video of the person who recorded it. She said this kind of behavior was unacceptable, and the adults in the native community had to say something about the math teacher’s dance.
