A Universitario coach at SP has been arrested suspected of racist allegations against Corinthian fans
2 min readSebastian Avellino Vargas, the physical coach of Universitario, Peru, was arrested in the act of racial insults early Wednesday, after a duel with Corinthians, at the New Quémica Arena, in the first leg of the Copa America qualifiers.
Corinthians fans accused the professional of making racist gestures shortly after the final whistle in Itakera. According to eyewitnesses, the Peruvian would flip over chairs in the western sector and imitate a monkey on the edge of the lawn.
Since there was no Special Criminal Court (Jecrim) unit on the field, Sebastian Avellino was taken to Police District 65, the police station responsible for crimes in the area, early in the morning.
In all, two fans and a ball boy from the club agreed to go to the PD to give evidence, as well as the police officers who had followed the case from the start. The witnesses were released around 3 a.m. on Wednesday.
The last to be heard was the physical trainer, who stayed about two hours inside a police car until he went to the Institute of Legal Medicine (IML), next to the police station, for a felony check. His testimony was subsequently recorded.
Two Universitario employees followed the situation closely at the police station. Armando Montejudo, the Peruvian consul in São Paulo, was also there to support a member of the Lima team’s technical committee, at the request of Universitario himself.
The accused remained in the police precinct until the morning, when he was transferred to the 50th police station. He will still have a custody hearing to find out the next steps in the process.
It is important to highlight that racism equals racial harm (Article 20 – Law 7716/89) is a non-bailable and non-payable offense.
