- Cannibal fish have been found dead on the beaches of the United States.
- The species is known to live at depths of around 1,000 metres.
- The fish is distinguished by its long, sharp fangs.
- Biologists theorize the cause of death, which remains a mystery.
A type of fish that eats its own sweat and lives in deep waters sparked the curiosity of biologists after the death of some individuals on the beaches of Oregon in the United States.
The Longnose Lancetfish, as it is known, lives between 200 and 1,000 meters below sea level and is slender and has a pair of huge fangs and bulging eyes.
The dead fish were taken in for analysis to determine the cause of their mysterious appearance on American shores.
Daniel J. Kamikawa, a biologist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, said the fish may have washed ashore due to the impact of clouds from recent storms in the area.
He also said that this phenomenon may be caused by disabling diseases or temporary shock, which is when a fish is suddenly exposed to colder water than it is used to.
As a result of the bizarre event, Oregon State Parks has now asked residents to take photos and tag the agency in online posts if more cases like this occur.
