– Al Jazeera EnglishBrazilian President Bolsonaro indicted for fake COVID certificate
1 min readFormer Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has found himself in hot water once again, this time for allegedly falsifying his COVID vaccination certificate. The Federal police have recommended prosecution for Bolsonaro and 16 others involved in the scheme, with charges including criminal association and insertion of false data into the public system, punishable by imprisonment.
Bolsonaro’s defence team has claimed that he was unaware of the false certificates and that his aides acted independently. This comes as no surprise to many, as Bolsonaro faced criticism during his presidency for downplaying the severity of the pandemic and opposing lockdown measures.
But this latest scandal is just the tip of the iceberg, as investigations are also underway into allegations of trying to sneak expensive jewellery into Brazil and his alleged involvement in a coup plot after losing the 2022 election. Ex-military aides have testified that Bolsonaro planned to ask for military intervention in case he lost the elections.
If charges are filed, Bolsonaro could face a potential maximum jail time of 12 years. The police are expected to complete their investigations by July, leaving many Brazilians wondering what the future holds for their former president.
