AMD’s response to Nvidia’s DLSS comes this month

AMD has announced that its supermodel technology, FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR), will be launched on June 22 to enhance performance and image quality in supported games. The company today gave a presentation in Computex Taipei with additional information about this feature, although it is not yet clear how effective it will be.

Supersampling is the focal point of the difference between AMD’s GPUs and its rival Nvidia. DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling), a version of Nvidia’s technology, uses neural networks to reconstruct high quality images from low resolutions in real time, and enables games to be played at smooth frame rates without compromising image quality. Nvidia re-launched DLSS with the RTX 20-Series in 2018, which has been increasing performance and support ever since. Now more than 50 games are working with DLSS, and Nvidia announced it today Red Dead Rescue2 And Siege of the rainbow river Gets the feature.

AMD first said it would work on the super model last year Announced the RX 6000-Series GPUs. The company has not yet provided many technical details about this feature, but says it will be open source and more than a dozen studios and engines will support it this year.

The FSR supports four levels. In AMD’s own test, running Godfall On the Radeon RX6800 XD with epic graphic systems and radiation tracking, performance mode ran at 150fps – a huge increase over the own rendering result of 49fps. Uniform, quality and high quality modes returned at 124fps, 99fps and 78fps respectively.

Since the FSR is open source, it will also run on Nvidia GPUs, including 10-series models that do not support DLSS. AMD demands a 41 percent performance increase in quality mode Godfall On a GTX 1060, for example, it raises the frame rate from 27fps to 38fps.

Companies ’own definitions should never be taken at face value, and of course the results are not all that meaningful without being able to see with our own eyes the impact on image quality. AMD has not shown much evidence of how FSR actually works in practice – but since it will be available in three weeks, we will not have much time to figure it out.
