The An apple announce you come in your subscription policy appswhich are intended to facilitate automatic renewal, but can also lead to unexpected fees.
Big Tech will ask users to subscribe before charging for the recently increased subscription price. However, in the future, the same apps may automatically charge higher prices, as long as they meet a set of conditions.
Apple will notify users of the price increase in advance via email and a push notification, but it is up to the user to opt out before they are charged – which may not be very practical.
The company said in its announcement that developers can use the feature if they do not raise its price more than once a year. In addition, the increase shall not exceed $5 and 50% of the current monthly subscription price, or $50 and 50% of the current annual subscription price.
Apple says that users tend to miss out on notifications asking them to choose higher subscription prices, which disrupts service provision for the apps in question. Therefore, the change aims to avoid this “inconvenience” to customers.
Since developers can only use the feature if they don’t change prices once a year, Big Tech believes there will be no cases of apps trying to “take advantage of the system”.
