With 20 Grand Slam titles in his career and over 300 weeks at number one in the ATP rankings, the Swiss ended his history on the court with his 276th career defeat, but that was the lowest of the day. The fencing alongside Nadal was especially for the fans who had followed his plays and matches for a long time and had waited 14 months to see him play again on the field.
Several tennis players left messages in a video posted by the ATP congratulating the Swiss on his career, for his years of magical shots on the court and for everything he represents in the sport:
“Thank you for everything you’ve done for me and all the fans in the world”Alexander Zverev.
“I hope you enjoy your retirement and I wish you all the best.” Daniel Medvedev.
“Thank you for everything”Corey Goff.
On social media, other athletes also spoke about the game:
“I don’t want this to end” Germany midfielder Toni Kroos said.
“I have practice in the morning, but sleep has to wait tonight. Last time, Roger Federer” Tennis athlete Ega Swiatek said
The current number 1 in the standings, a place where Federer has been most, Carlos Alcaraz was saddened by the defeat, but was grateful to be able to see Federer play last time.
Citizen Stan Wawrinka clearly couldn’t hold back the emotions either.
