Atlético de Madrid changes focused on the market and wants Gabigol; I know why
2 min readStriker Gabigol, from Flamengo, was in the crosshairs of Atletico Madrid, according to the Spanish portal Fichaes.net. The information drew attention, as the Spanish club had another name in its aspiration for the role. The team’s target was Benfica’s Uruguayan Darwin Nunez, who will be almost certain for next season, but negotiations have stalled.
This is because, according to Portuguese newspaper Notícias ao Minuto, Benfica want at least 120 million euros (616 million Brazilian reals) to release Nunez to Atletico Madrid. This represents a value four times greater than the fine for Gabigol’s termination at Flamengo, which is 30 million euros (154 million R$). In addition, the market value of Gabigol, according to Transfermarkt, is even lower, at about 26 million euros (133 million Brazilian reals).
The release clause for Gabigol will be in the region of €50m, which is still well below what Benfica is asking for by Darwin Nunez.
The trend is for Atletico Madrid to arrive at Flamengo with a proposal in hand. However, Carioca FC shouldn’t make it easy for Gabigol to exit as the season progresses. The European window opens in June only.
Gabigol Numbers x Darwin Nunez Numbers
Gabigol did not have a good time in European football, making only 15 appearances and two goals for Inter Milan and Benfica. But since his return to Brazil, he has numbers that are above average for any Brazilian player. He was the Brazilian League’s top scorer in 2018 for Santos and in 2019, with Flamengo, he repeated the dose. Between 2018 and the beginning of 2022, Gabigol played 215 matches, scored 141 goals and made 37 assists. The average number of goals a player has scored in Brazilian football is 0.82 per game.
Striker Daruim Nunez, in turn, revealed by Peñarol, in 2018, quickly distinguished, and in 2019 he was hired by Almeria, from Spain. He shone at the Spanish club and after one season he was appointed by Benfica. In his three years in European football, Nunez played 112 matches, scoring 61 goals and making 17 assists. The average number of goals scored by Uruguay is 0.64 per game.
