Recorded cases of monkeypox in Europe, North America and Australia in recent days have alarmed scientists and health agencies. There are already at least 100 cases reported outside Africa, in 13 countries (the United Kingdom, Spain, Portugal, Germany, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy, Sweden, Israel, the United States, Canada and Australia).

Austria recorded its first suspected case on Sunday (22).

And in Spain, one of the European countries with the highest number of cases, health authorities closed a sauna in Madrid on Friday (20) as a precaution after suspected monkeypox cases among regular people. (read more here).

On the African continent, there are already more than 1,200 suspected cases in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. There are no case reports in Brazil.

Experts still do not know exactly how the disease is transmitted. Monkeypox is generally transmitted from animals to humans – because it is a zoonotic disease – and more often than not from person to person. Outbreaks have occurred in the past – most recently in 2021 in the US.
