Covid-19 Linked to Decline in IQ Scores

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has made a significant change to their guidelines regarding isolation for COVID-19 cases. The previous recommendation of a 5-day isolation period has been dropped in light of new research that shows the virus can have serious effects on the brain.

Recent studies have shown that COVID-19 can lead to a variety of neurological symptoms, including brain fog, headaches, seizures, strokes, sleep disorders, nerve paralysis, mental health issues, and significant drops in IQ scores. Dr. Ziyad Al-Aly recently summarized these findings in a comprehensive review of research on COVID-19 and the brain.

Research published in the New England Journal of Medicine has revealed deficits in memory and executive task performance in COVID-19 patients, even those with mild cases or persistent symptoms. Patients with mild cases were found to lose the equivalent of three IQ points, while those with persistent symptoms lost six points and those who required ICU treatment lost nine points. Additionally, individuals who were reinfected with COVID-19 experienced an additional two-point loss in IQ.

It is becoming increasingly clear that COVID-19 can affect various body systems in profound ways. The author of the study emphasized the importance of following safety measures such as wearing masks and practicing social distancing to prevent the spread of the virus.

As the world continues to grapple with the ongoing pandemic, every new study sheds more light on the long-term effects of COVID-19. It is crucial for individuals to stay informed and take necessary precautions to protect themselves and others from this devastating virus.
