The Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz) has identified, through genetic analysis, a substitution of the BA.1 strain of covid-19 with a BA.2 ratio in samples analyzed between May 20 and June 2. Both are variables of microns. In addition, Fucruz identified, in this period, an increase in detection between May and June of BA.4, BA.5 and BA.2.12.1 strains, which have genomic characteristics that could lead to increased virus transmissibility.

The data is computed weekly on a network of technology platforms with data from the EpiCoV platform of the Global Initiative to Share All Influenza Data (Gisaid), an international platform for sharing genetic data on influenza viruses and Sars-CoV-2.

An update of the Fiocruz Genomic Network shows the genetic characterization of seven confirmed RT-PCR cases of SARS-CoV-2 and influenza co-infection and 69 cases of reinfection, 48 of which are associated with re-infection with a micron.

The BA.1 variant was responsible for the covid outbreak in the country that occurred between December 2021 and January 2022. BA.2 gained space not only in Brazil but in other countries. The BA.4 and BA.5 strains appear to propagate faster than the previous Omicron mutants.

The Fiocruz Genomic Network has already produced a total of 709 reports and sent them to government laboratories and surveillance, which contain 45,657 genomes. The work is carried out by the Laboratory of Respiratory Virology and Measles at the Instituto Oswaldo Cruz (IOC / Fiocruz), in Rio de Janeiro, and laboratories that are part of the Fiocruz Genomic Network in seven other states: Amazonas, Bahia, Ceará, Minas Gerais, Piauí, Parana and Pernambuco. These eight observation posts serve 26 states and the Federal District.

To date, the World Health Organization (WHO) has recognized ten priority monitoring variables, categorized into four categories: variables of concern (VOC), variables of concern (VOI), variables under control (VUM), and diverse strains of concern. Under observation (VOC-LUM). Only micron and delta VOCs are traded.
