However, this is not just about communication skills. According to Dustin York, associate professor of communications at Mariel University, these new professionals need nonverbal cues about how to maintain eye contact and how to behave in the room.
York claims it’s a way to build more trust with co-workers. It is very important for him to feel familiar in the work environment.
“The ability to build trust with colleagues and clients, and to build credibility and empathy, stems from nonverbal skills. This is very important.”
And this happens because when these new workers, who are accustomed to the virtual environment, come into contact with reality, they are not ready to deal with the situations.
That’s because Zoom, or any other room inside the computers, doesn’t give them a chance to understand the people there.
Guidance for these skills is important
According to Dustin York, this kind of guidance and assistance is very important, especially for those who are just arriving in a face-to-face environment. In addition, this non-verbal skill is learned quickly, if it is done well and shown that everything is in order.
By practicing these skills for five to seven days, York says, it’s really a way to get that kind of agenda on the line so that new recruits and hires can embark on that learning.
Moreover, it can also help bridge the communication gap, as people will learn to talk to each other outside of screens.
Zoom and Meet can be a real stack when it comes to these communication skills. This is because you can’t notice body language, plus the fact that being in an online meeting doesn’t bring on the feeling of people gathered to discuss their thoughts.
Another point that can cause significant confusion is the audio, which can suffer from interruptions, or the Internet can be interrupted. So, you are “signed out” and alone in your home office work environment. Basically, the lack of face-to-face communication can delay the expansion of communication skills.
