Intrigue, dead bodies and holes of memory

Intrigue, cadavres et trous de mémoire

A thanatopractrice that, time for a story, slips into the skin of a legal pathologist, this goes a bit of self. It is in any case what Katy Boyer-Gaboriault was chosen as the frame of his first novel, the hunter of The mist, where mingle the dead bodies and miseries of everyday life.

If the picture looks depressing (and it is !), the author still manages to inject a healthy dose of black humour and humanity. At the heart of the story, her character, Dr. Christopher Nelles, struggles to maintain her personal and professional life afloat.

Refusing vehemently to accept the diagnosis of alzheimer’s disease early, which afflicts the woman of his life, the specialist must at the same time shed light on the death nebulous of a teenager. Murder or accident ? Reviews and analyses provide little answers, while the pressure increases to lighten the drama and find a culprit.

The extracts of post mortem examinations use a pretext to Katy Boyer-Gaboriault to give — in detail — an overview of what takes place at the Laboratory of forensic sciences and forensic medicine of Montreal. “I’m not a pathologist, but I have attended autopsies and I see them regularly of the body after an autopsy “, slips the embaumeuse to justify his knowledge.

The young woman, who has spent all of his childhood and adolescence in Sainte-Sabine, where she still lives and his family lives, and now practices his profession in Montreal. A profession that is amazing, that react to every move.

“I would have liked to be a doctor, but I didn’t have the notes for the future. The funerary world and its hand hidden had me always intrigued. After one year of study in respiratory therapy, I was released to go see on the side of the thanatopraxie. And I’m since 15 years. “

“What I like, she says, is to see where one starts and how far one can go. I’m really thinking of the families. If it was my brother or my father, I would like to see a nice one last time… It is that evolution that interests me, both for the normal cases than for the more difficult cases, for families to be able to say that the deceased person was as he knew her. It is my job to help people get through the difficult stage of the death of a loved one. “

“Cranky, but lovable “

The character of Christopher Nelles is “born spontaneously” in his mind a few years ago, in one of the news that she had then composed. It is by completing a university certificate in creative writing in 2014, so that it would produce a text of fifty pages, that she had the idea of reviving the pathologist on paper.

“Dr. Nelles, maybe it’s a little bit me, if I was a doctor a man of 50 years. A little grumpy, but adorable ! “, she says laughing.

As for the story itself, it is inspired by her own reflections.

“A lot of the things that obsess me in life, including losing my independence at a young age. I knew that some people had alzheimer’s young, and I wanted to dig this theme. And for the basic plot, I wanted to be a counterweight to what we often see in the tv series. The work of the scientific, judicial and police officers is not always to find a culprit at any price ; it is also sometimes to exonerate someone. I was interested to change the perceptions. “

You will have understood that it took five years — writing, breaks, cuts, proofreading and rewriting — before the mother could take The hunter of mist between his hands.

The result is interesting, to a small flat near… through his gruff Dr. Nelles, the author is not tender towards the media, up to the process of “vultures”.

Really ? “I do not consider that all journalists are vultures, she defends herself, but working in the middle funeral, I’ve already seen cases where the media were trying to “dig up” things. In the story, my character has seen too many stories of this kind. It is bigger, but at the base, I am inspired by a story that came to me. But believe me, I’m a girl informed, and I am for the free journalism ! “, she says.

When asked if a next book is on fire, we’re guessing that the project of the tickles. Remains only to find the necessary momentum. “I have a track, but still nothing concrete ! “
