Argentine striker who granted citizenship to Paraguay, Juan Manuel Iturbi, 30, is Gremio’s latest signing. After completing his medical on Thursday morning, at CT Luiz Carvalho. The player signed a contract with the club, until December 2023, with the option to renew for another season.
Iturbi was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, but moved to Asuncion very early. The son of Paraguayan parents, he started playing football in the youth teams of Cerro Porteño, making his professional debut at just 16 years old, in 2009. That year, he won his first adult title, the Torneo Apertura. In mid-2011, he moved to Porto, where he was crowned Portuguese champion in the 2011/12 and 2012/13 seasons. Subsequently, he was loaned out to River Plate/ARG and Verona/ITA before being bought by Roma in mid-2014. During this period in the Italian team, he was loaned out to Bournemouth in England, before starting his career in Mexican football, defending for Tijuana and Pumas. And Pachuca. His last two seasons were defending for Aris de Thessaloniki, Greece. Iturbi also played for Argentina’s youth team, playing in two World Cups and two South American U-20s. In 2016, he decided to choose to defend the main squad of Paraguay, playing in two Copa América tournaments, one of them in 2019, in Brazil. Iturbe was in Arena do Grêmio for the quarter-final match between Brazil and Paraguay, but remained on the bench.
