Lula says she dreams of a BRICS currency and criticizes US sanctions

Along with Maduro, the president has declared that he dreams of not depending on the dollar and that US sanctions are “excessive”.
President Luis Inacio Lula da Silva (PT) said on Monday (29.May.2023) that BRICS, a group of emerging nations made up of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, dreams of a single currency. He also criticized US sanctions on Venezuela, which he characterized as “exaggerated”.
“I am not going to say that I have never thought and never dreamed of establishing trade in our own currencies. […] I dream of having a currency between our countries to do business without depending on the dollar. […] I dream of having a BRICS currency. So I think we have to move on.He said this after meeting with Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro at Planaldo Palace.

The petista was harsh when criticizing the economic sanctions on the neighboring country, mainly the North American ones: “900 sanctions imposed on one country is inexplicable because other countries don’t like it.

The president likened the sanctions to a war, saying it was worse than armed conflict. According to Lula, punishments can even kill children.
