United canceled 189 flights on Friday and 140 on Saturday. Flights scheduled for Sunday in the area were further grounded.

Not all airlines blame Govt for interrupting their schedule. American Airlines noted that “there is nothing to announce”, while Southwest Airlines commented that “things are going well”. JetBlue, which canceled 150 flights on Fridays and Saturdays, did not respond to a request for comment, according to FlightAware.

Air delays and cancellations, with staff shortages, are a regular problem for the US aviation industry. Just as the travel industry rebounded when trips fell in 2020, airlines encouraged employees to leave when staff was low this year.

“The nationwide increase in Omigran variation cases this week has had a direct impact on our team and the people who carry out our operations,” United said in a statement. “As a result, unfortunately we had to cancel some flights and inform the affected customers before they arrive at the airport.”

Delta said it had canceled scheduled flights on Friday due to Omigran’s impact and bad weather, “after exhausting all options and resources, including diverting and replacing aircraft and crew members to cover scheduled flights.”

Both airlines said they were trying to modify flights for the affected passengers.
