Pain from several shards of glass on my lips
2 min readA man posted a social media account of being infected with monkeypox. Joao Pinheiro, thinking he had a cold sore, says that the lesion in his mouth “never got better” and that the symptoms then developed into tiredness, fatigue, mild fever and localized pain.
“I was starting to get tired/fatigue – which I thought was because of the 45°C heat I was doing where I was.” Then he reported that “a cold sore appeared. But this cold sore did not get better, it got bigger and then I started feeling swollen glands in my neck,” the young man wrote on his Twitter account.

The lawyer says he decided to go to the hospital to investigate the symptoms and immediately underwent a monkeypox test. And after the result was positive, the pain worsened and other injuries appeared.
“I had some on my face, but they even came out and didn’t leave any marks. However, the mouth wound was worth all the other wounds I could get. Doctors say that because it’s in the mucosa, things are more difficult,” he wrote.
He says that a week after the symptoms began, the pain in his mouth had increased and the site of the injury was so swollen that he was unable to eat. “The pain I can describe is: Several glass shards on my lips and pliers you press on. It’s localized pain but polyneuropathy, terrible, 10 out of 10,” he says.
This Tuesday, he used the platform to say he had been taken to a hospital unit. Counsel continues on the twelfth day from the onset of symptoms and treatment for pain. “I’m fine and thank you for the vast majority of the positive comments,” he wrote.
In the report, he said he didn’t know how he got it because he had only been in close contact with one person during the flight, and he didn’t have any kind of symptoms.
“I don’t know how I got it,” he said, “because the only person I’ve ever had an intimate relationship with on the trip I’ve taken hasn’t had anything.”
In addition, Joao expressed the prejudice of smallpox sufferers: he said that sufferers are treated as if they were “dirty people.”
