The comments come after Washington expressed concern over Russian military positions near the Ukrainian border.
On Wednesday, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken warned Russia not to “make another big mistake” in Ukraine.
Washington cited Moscow’s occupation of Crimea seven years ago and accused it of supporting separatists within Ukraine.
On Friday, the European Union also expressed concern over Russian military operations near the Ukrainian border.
The European Union (EU) says it is monitoring the situation with allies, including the United States and the United Kingdom.
A Pentagon spokesman said the Russian movement was “extraordinary in its size and purpose.”
Since Ukraine annexed the Crimean peninsula in 2014, it has faced separatist groups backed by Russia.
