Putin’s opponent arrested in Russia
1 min readVladimir Kara-Murza, one of the main opponents of the Kremlin who still lives in Russia, was arrested on Monday (11) near his residence, according to his lawyer, Vadim Progorov.
The reasons for the arrest have not yet been revealed and the authorities have not made any statement, but Kara-Murza has recently criticized Moscow’s military intervention in Ukraine on several occasions.
Russia has beefed up its legislative arsenal to deal with criticism of the military operation. Disseminating information about the military that the government deems false can be punished with up to 15 years in prison.
In addition, the arrests of protesters, the closure of NGOs and independent media, and the blocking of social media networks have multiplied.
Kara Morza, 40, a former journalist close to the opposition Boris Nemtsov, was killed outside the Kremlin in 2015, and Mikhail Khodorkovsky, an oligarch who became a critic of Vladimir Putin.
The opponent alleges that he was poisoned twice for his political activities in 2015 and 2017.
Despite everything, he still lives in Russia, while many opposition figures went into exile, especially after the poisoning of Alexei Navalny, a black monster in the Kremlin, last year.
