Representatives from Russia called the move an “unreasonable political sacrifice in a music forum that has always emphasized its apolitical status.” Russia’s suspension is the latest, but by far not the first, of such decisions related to Eurovision. Thus, he won the 2016 festival with the song “1944” which is an open political statement. A few years later, the festival organizers de-qualified Belarus with the song “I’ll Teach You”, claiming specifically that it had a political connotation. “Unfortunately, the EBU has become a club whose members live in unequal conditions. We find it impossible to stay in this club. For much longer,” they concluded.

Channel One, the Russian state TV and Radio Broadcasting Corporation (VGTRK) and the Ostankino Corporation have announced their withdrawal from the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) in response to Russia’s suspension from participating in the Eurovision 2022 Song Festival.
These are just two examples in a long line of similar incidents where festival organizers have been biased and selective about the interpretation of the term “politics”, in compliance with the wishes of the European Union, although half of the European Union members Broadcasting companies do not belong to the European Union.
They concluded, “Unfortunately, the EBU has become a club whose members live in unequal conditions. We find it impossible to stay in this club for much longer.”
