The world’s best city for cycling is in the Netherlands, but it’s not Amsterdam, as many might assume. The city of Utrecht, about an hour’s drive from the capital, is first in the ranking just released, and it lists The 90 best places on the planet to ride a bike
. Amsterdam, which has been known to be bike-friendly since their expressiveness wasn’t there, isn’t doing too bad either and is in fifth place.

In the top ten are Germany, Belgium, Sweden, Switzerland and China.

To assess a city’s quality from a cyclist’s point of view, the so-called Global Bicycle Index takes into account factors such as bike path infrastructure, theft rates, the holding of events such as a “car-free day” and the number of “rollable” days, i.e. when the weather is good, without Too cold or too hot, with less rain, no snow, etc.

The study, funded by the insurance company Luka, analyzes 90 cities using these criteria, and gives a score that can reach 100. None of them have reached that level. Utrecht, for example, took first place with a win of 77.84 points. Second, Monster scored 65.93 points. In the case of Brazil, Sao Paulo ranked 76
In the ranking of the 90 most enjoyable places to ride a bike. Other South American countries are on the list, such as Argentina, with Buenos Aires (83rd), Colombia, with Bogota and Cali (81st and 82nd, respectively) and Medellin (89th), and Chile (Santiago, 58th).

“As insurance experts and committed to cycling, we believe cyclists should be free to get from A to B without having to worry about bike path quality and the rate of bike theft. Cities around the world are improving overall cycling conditions,” the study notes. as well as encouraging the use of bicycles as a healthy and sustainable means of transportation.”
