Scientists discover strange species of “ghost” sharks with glowing eyes

Last month, a new species of fearsome shark was officially confirmed, more than ten years after eggs were found inside a dead female in Australia. This animal, with its bright white eyes, has remained a question mark for biologists, but has now been identified as unique.
The shark was named after Apristurus ovicorrugatus due to the appearance of existing eggs. It is a type of shark, often called the “ghost shark”, which lives in deep waters and therefore has a strange appearance.
Inside one of the eggs found in 2011 was an embryo that clearly indicated it was from a species of shark, but this did not correspond to any of the species known until then.
Two more embryos are found in Australia’s national fish collection, and the pair are matched, revealing that the fish seen earlier was mistakenly classified as a southern Chinese cat shark, Apristurus sinensis.
Given its glowing white eyes, scientists have been left wondering what species of sharks it could be.
said the study’s lead author about the new discovery, Will White, when asked about the creature’s eyes.
