Shiv Telegram Media – 2 CPS students confirmed to have measles as new cases increase to 12, officials report

Two Chicago Public Schools students have been diagnosed with measles, leading to a total of 12 confirmed cases in the city as of Thursday evening. The cases were reported at Philip D. Armour Elementary School in Bridgeport and Cooper Dual Language Elementary Academy in Pilsen.

CPS is collaborating closely with the Chicago Department of Public Health to address the unvaccinated students and the confirmed positive cases. CPS CEO Pedro Martinez is urging families and staff to check their vaccination status and obtain the MMR vaccine if necessary.

Despite the recent outbreak, it has been clarified that the measles situation does not resemble the COVID-19 pandemic, as a majority of Chicago residents are protected from measles by the vaccine.

The Chicago Department of Public Health has advised school-aged Pilsen shelter residents to remain in place and avoid attending school. Out of the 12 confirmed cases, 10 were traced back to a Pilsen migrant shelter.

Measles symptoms include rash, high fever, cough, runny nose, and red, watery eyes. The virus spreads through direct contact with infectious droplets or through airborne transmission. The measles virus can remain infectious in the air for up to two hours after an infected person has left the area. Residents are urged to take necessary precautions and seek medical attention if experiencing symptoms related to measles.
