Qualcomm has recently announced the launch of its new Snapdragon 8S Gen 3 chipset, targeting the mid-range smartphone market. Positioned slightly below their current flagship chipset, the 8S Gen 3 is designed to bring advanced features of the 8 Gen 3 to more affordable devices.
One of the key highlights of the new chipset is its support for on-device generative AI models, allowing for enhanced AI capabilities on smartphones. While the CPU in the 8S Gen 3 is similar to the 8 Gen 3, it features one less performance core and runs at a lower frequency. Additionally, the chipset includes a previous-generation modem, the X70 5G, with Wi-Fi 7 support and hardware-accelerated ray tracing for improved gaming performance.
Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8S Gen 3 supports multimodal generative AI on-device and is capable of running large language models with up to 10 billion parameters. Positioned just below the standard 8 Gen 3 in Qualcomm’s chipset lineup, the 8S Gen 3 is expected to be integrated into upcoming devices from popular brands like Honor, iQOO, Realme, Redmi, and Xiaomi in the coming months.
With this new chipset, Qualcomm aims to compete with MediaTek by offering high-end features at a more affordable price point. However, it has been noted that the Snapdragon 8S Gen 3 will not initially be available in devices sold in the US.
Overall, the launch of the Snapdragon 8S Gen 3 chipset is set to bring advanced features and capabilities to mid-range smartphones, catering to the growing demand for high-performance devices at a more accessible price range.
