Shiv Telegram Media: Instagram Threads Sees 20% of Twitters Weekly Active Users – TechCrunch
2 min readInstagram Threads Surpasses 100 Million Users in a Remarkably Short Time
Instagram’s new messaging app, Threads, has taken the social media world by storm, amassing over 100 million users within days of its launch. This astounding achievement is even more impressive considering that it has gained one-fifth of Twitter’s weekly active user base globally and 86 times more users than its US competitor, Truth Social, which only managed to attract 1 million weekly active users.
Though early data analysis showed a slight dip in Threads’ usage, with a decline in daily active users and time spent on the app, app intelligence firm data.ai predicts that this is just a temporary setback. According to their projections, Threads’ momentum is far from over.
In addition to its rapid user acquisition, the app has surpassed 150 million downloads, making it the fastest-growing app in history, leaving even Pokémon GO in the dust. In its first partial week of availability, Threads has attracted approximately 93 million active users worldwide, crossing the 100 million signups mark by July 10.
Geographically, India leads the pack in terms of downloads, accounting for 33% of global downloads. This is followed by Brazil, the US, Mexico, and Japan, indicating a global appeal for this new messaging platform.
However, it is important to note that Threads is currently not available in the European Union (EU) due to concerns about privacy and data collection practices. Nonetheless, Meta (the parent company of Instagram) is actively working to restrict EU users from using VPNs to access the app.
Despite its impressive success, Threads has not been resting on its laurels. The app recently released its first major update, adding support for iOS 17 and introducing smaller changes to enhance user experience. Looking ahead, planned future improvements include a following feed, an edit button, multi-account support, and integration with ActivityPub for decentralized social networking.
Threads has undoubtedly entered the social media landscape with a bang, revolutionizing messaging apps and captivating users worldwide. As its user base continues to grow, it will be fascinating to see how the app evolves and whether it can maintain its rapid upward trajectory in the competitive social media market.
