Shiv Telegram Media: Understanding Orthorexia and its effect on eating habits

Orthorexia, an eating disorder centered around an obsession with eating “clean,” is gaining attention as more individuals open up about their struggles. Jason Wood recently shared his own battle with orthorexia, a disorder not officially recognized in the DSM, on ‘Shiv Telegram Media’.

Therapist Jennifer Rollin has noticed an increase in orthorexia among her patients, highlighting the dangers of this fixation on healthy eating. Orthorexia can lead to obsessive behavior and may eventually result in the development of other eating disorders such as bulimia or anorexia nervosa.

Wood revealed that his friends and family were unaware of his disorder as it was disguised as a focus on healthy eating. The disorder can be costly, distracting, and can hinder personal goals and values. Dr. Jennifer Gaudiani emphasized the challenges in defining what is truly healthy within the context of diet culture.

Treatment for orthorexia typically follows a similar path to treatment for other eating disorders. Recovery involves reshaping ideas about health and educating loved ones about the disorder. Gaudiani stressed the importance of self-compassion throughout the recovery process.

Wood shared his journey to recovery, describing a pivotal moment at a vacation dinner where he felt like he was finally beginning to truly live again after hitting rock bottom. His story serves as a reminder of the complexities of eating disorders and the importance of seeking help and support.
