The BLOCK of the Internet hit a record high in 2022; understand why
2 min readIn the past year, there have been many complications in the virtual world, especially many application blocks and to stop from Internet. Although it was a frequent thing, few people knew the real reason why it happened.
At that time, many people believed that the fact that applications stopped working, as well as the Internet, could be a consequence of a general outage. After all, they all had the same problem.
However, this is not what happened. The occurrence of 187 “power outages” during protests, mass conflicts, elections and humanitarian crises is no accident.
The report begins tracking power outages
The digital rights group Access Now and the #KeepItOn campaign released statements from the report, which led to an increase in the number of “blackouts”.
As a result, the number recorded is the highest since this accounting began, in 2016. Thus, nothing compares to the number of “falls” recorded in 2022.
In this way, a kind of record has been achieved and it has become a greater concern to get rid of the night’s sleep for those who really care about the free use of the Internet, even in times of political instability.
Where did the power outage occur?
According to the data of the report, the whole world was not exempt from what happened last year. With that said, there are a total of 35 countries affected.
However, India has proven to be the ‘leader’ in blackouts, with 84 in 2022 alone, and soon after comes Ukraine, with the second highest number of blackouts. It should be noted that the country has been at war since February last year.
What is the reason for this phenomenon?
According to the data, the four main reasons for internet shutdowns and instability in communication applications identified are: protests, conflicts, elections or also to prevent fraud in tests and exams.
